Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

To achieve a more sustainable classroom, we have made every effort possible in reducing our materials use. However, we still want students to feel validated and proud to display and share their work without the need of being limited.

Typically, our writing revolves around students' cultures, their individual funds of knowledge, or within research projects on inclusivity and SEL.

We try to showcase as many pieces as we can, especially during observed campaigns such as Autism Awareness Month or during SEL week.

Having a printer and scanner that run on eco-conscious technologies would allow us to reduce the amount of materials we purchase while also allowing students to print/create stickers or banners with less of an environmental impact. Lastly, students would be able to produce projects that include visuals to support them in learning, researching and in spreading a message of compassion.

Students will learn to see through another peers perspective by writing/reading personal narratives from classmates in the same or neighboring classrooms. This is especially important when discussing events such as Dia De Los Muertos where we honor ancestors and loved ones.

Then, students will brainstorm culturally appropriate actions and solutions that could be used to respect, honor, and help alleviate the hardships of their peers or of the members of society around them.

Lastly, success will be measured through a survey or from anecdotal notes. We will hopefully see reduced conflicts at our school during social integration times while also noting if students are communicating and collaborating more effectively as a results of deeper understanding of one another. Having students lead the forefront of campaigns of compassion and focus will also foster a stronger commitment and culture to themselves and others.
