This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
P. is a Title I school where most of our students receive free and reduced lunch. Our school population is diverse and many of our students are English Language Learners. The fifth grade cheerleading team meets weekly before school. The cheerleading team is comprised of 5th grade female athletes who joined the team voluntarily.
Our cheerleading team is made up of students from all classes, they have a variety of academic abilities, and many speak more than one language.
Our cheerleaders work together to learn routines for the staff versus student basketball game. Fifth grade cheerleaders pride themselves in being role models for the school and active members of the school community.
My Project
This is the third season for the P. 5th grade cheerleaders. It is the goal of the volunteer coaches to improve the program each year by providing student athletes with opportunities that instill the importance of sportsmanship in each cheerleader.
For many of our student athletes, the 5th grade cheerleading team is their first exposure to being a part of a unified team.
The St. John's University cheerleading clinic will allow our students to work together with a college level cheerleading team in their gymnasium. The St. John's cheerleaders will teach our students a special routine, show our student athletes their own routines, and provide the team with an opportunity they will remember forever.
Practicing with the St. John's University cheerleaders will be a unique experience that will not only provide our student athletes with an amazing opportunity, but it will give them memories that will last a lifetime!
