My Students

My school is a beautiful place where refugees, immigrants, long-time residents, and the community embrace the diversity and experiences of the students. Many of our city's refugee services are located in this neighborhood so it's the first stop for many families coming to the U.S. from difficult situations. The school becomes a special place for students to develop their identity in our country.

The music room is a special place because music is a universal language.

Students learn drumming, guitar, recorders, xylophones, dance, singing, and composition. Music class is like a laboratory for hands on learning.

My Project

At my school we work out a lot of musical problems using xylophones. “How can music be sad? Try making sad music on a xylophone! What did you discover?” We have xylophones in the music room, but they are 15 years old, well loved, and breaking. We are trying to keep our distance when we play, but with so many instruments broken, kids are waiting a long time to take a turn rather than standing too close together. We really should have 6 more in order to spread the kids out.
