Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

The materials I am requesting will help my students see the world through the eyes of another person by simply allowing them to get to know one another and to build trust. I thought of an engaging idea that would encourage friendships and compassion through "Spread Kindness Through Friendship Bracelets" Day. I would start the first day of school reading a book called, "Kindness is My Superpower." This book emphasizes having more understanding for others, accept diversity, thrive in a multicultural and inclusive environment, and show more empathy. Afterwards, the students will randomly pick a name of a friend who they will make a friendship bracelet for. Before the students can make a friendship bracelet, the students will take time getting to know the student that they've picked through questionnaires and games purchased from TeachersPayTeachers. By the end of the day, I would be able to measure my students' understanding of compassion through self created posters of what they think compassion means. The students will share their posters in pairs and in front of the whole class. It is my hope that this activity/day would encourage students to help friends that they've spent time learning about and formed connections with.

In the words of Maya Angelou, "Try to be a rainbow in someone else's clouds." I would like to continue to implement "Spread Kindness Through Friendship Bracelets" Day throughout the year.

It would be awesome for the students to collect bracelets from different friends within the classroom. Ultimately, I would like for the students to understand that compassion and kindness is necessary for healthy friendships.
