I am excited to begin a new journey as the first full-time school counselor at a new site! An important part of this small community, my school serves around 325 students from a variety of backgrounds. Some students come from military families, some are in foster care, some struggle with difficult home lives, and many come from low-income households.
I will be providing weekly social-emotional lessons to ALL classes on campus, and will do so in my very own classroom.
As we have seen in the media of late, it is so imperative to teach these social and coping skills to children as early as possible! Some of my monthly focuses include empathy, emotional regulation, self-esteem, coping skills, kindness, and growth mindset. I am so excited to bring this service to my school!
In addition to the whole-class lessons, I will also provide individual and small group counseling to students who require a little more TLC. These sessions are targeted to the individual needs of the students and seek to help them cope with current and future adversity in a healthy manner.
My Project
This project will allow my students to participate in spreading kindness through art projects such as micro-paintings on the mini canvases and painting the river rocks with positive messages. These items will be shared with staff, families, the local community, and other students. The rocks may even be hidden around campus for unsuspecting students, staff, or parents to find!
When we practice acts of kindness, we increase our desire and willingness to be kind and empathetic in the future.
It is imperative, in today's world of technology, that we preserve the importance of human connection and empathy for one another.
As a school counselor, I am constantly teaching my students to be kind to each other. Today's youth are so disconnected due to the influence of technology- it is imperative that we continue teaching students to connect. Art is a great way to do that!
