This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our music theatre class is currently using household track lighting for our productions. This method has been adequate, but does not do the job that real stage lighting could. Using real world equipment would allow us to provide higher quality presentations and give students real world skills.

Our small charter high school provides a quality education to the majority Hispanic East Los Angeles.

Most of our students, although from at-risk and lower socioeconomic backgrounds, are appreciative of what our school has to offer them. Our school performs very well in comparison with the other schools in our area and 89% of our graduates are accepted yearly into a four year university. Most of the schools in our area have had to cut music programs. However, our STEM based school realizes the importance of the arts and has put emphasis on establishing a quality music program for our students. We include one of the few Music Theatre programs in Los Angeles.

My Project

By obtaining a Follow Spotlight and Par Can Stage Lighting, our students can instantly improve the quality of our musical theatre productions by giving us greater latitude in the lighting design of scenes. Additionally, using real world equipment will allow students to gain skills in theatre craft and lighting design. These skills will allow students to gain interest in possibly pursuing these fields in college and future professional careers. Using real world equipment will allow students to adequately design lighting for our shows and use creativity in how each scene is lit, which improves the overall production. This improves the program and allows us to raise the bar on the standards for each production.

With a Follow Spotlight and Par Can Stage Lighting, my students will get to produce even more creative musical theatre productions and gain confidence in their own abilities.

This gives all students the ability to gain real world communication skills and possibly start a path in music theatre and lighting design in and after college.
