My Students

There is something magical about a new book - the new book smell, the texture of fresh unwrinkled pages between your fingers, the cover solidly attached to the book, and not haphazardly taped on... My students do not often get the opportunity to experience this new book sensation.

My students are entering their final year of high school.

They attend a small school of only 250 students and they know each other by name. They are a family; they cheer for each other in successes, and support each other in their losses. There is also a large percentage of my students who are athletes - nearly 85% of the student body participates in extra-curricular athletics. This is also a student body who is largely affected by budget cuts affecting our district. Unlike more affluent schools in our district, our families cannot afford to make up for the gap in the budget. They definitely cannot afford to supplement money for school supplies or novels. For this reason, our school rarely gets new books. These are wonderful kids with big dreams about going far in sports, in academics, and in their lives. They are yearning for someone who will take their passion for sports, and apply it inside the classroom.

My Project

I am asking for sports-themed novel sets for my classroom. These novels will allow my students to explore sports through college-level writing and reading skills. They will allow my students to expand their passion for one sport into a understanding of multiple sports. They will be able to look at issues affecting all sports (steroids, money, stereotypes) from an academic perspective, rather than from just what they see or hear on television soundbites. These novels will allow my students to discuss the merits and challenges of professional athletics (as well as college and youth) in terms of more than just the benefits to the athlete, but also in terms of the social, personal, and political ramifications.

This project aims to challenge the students who stereotypically are the first out of the door of their English class.

Student athletes have long struggled with finding themselves in the text choices in Language Arts. This project aims to not only keep them in the classroom, but also keep them engaged and wanting more!
