This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Too many times in my class my students mention that they do not want to go outside. That they rather spend their free time playing video games or watching TV. The lack of physical activity in my community has caused an obesity epidemic.

The prevalence of obesity was 19% and affected about 14 and a half million children and adolescents.

Obesity prevalence was 25.6% among Hispanic children which makes up 90% of my school populations.

With these tools, I hope to spark a love of being outside and playing sports with my students. The soccer goals will be used to start a Mustang Soccer Club at my school. My students love soccer and our school does not have any soccer goals. All students will also be to use the soccer goals during recess time and during our hour long daily PE time.

The after school challenge program will also use the sports equipment to teach the students how to throw and catch the footballs and also develop shooting mechanics in basketball.

Our school has the markings for a baseball field. Using the dodgeballs, students will be able to play kickball. Here we will learn the foundational rules of baseball/softball before the students head to middle school.

Outside the gym, our school has a volleyball net but students do not have any balls to use. Sometimes, a single girl from the school volleyball team brings a ball to play. This is not enough to support 90+ kids per grade level. The volleyballs will be available for all kids to be used daily.
