My Students

As the music teacher of the only non-audition based music school in New York City, I strive to give my students every opportunity. Our school was opened less than 15 years ago with the mission to give all students, regardless of their prior knowledge, an opportunity to learn and grow in the arts.

Over 95% of the students are of black or Hispanic heritage, and over 85% qualify for free or reduced-priced lunch.

Although many of our students' math and reading skills fall below grade level, they are intelligent, passionate, and all performers at heart.

My Project

As our resources have expanded over the last year, our class sizes have been able to increase as well! Being able to have more students on more instruments is always exciting, but with each added student on an instrument, there is also the added sound. Our classroom has just become a "flipped classroom" which means all of the lessons are pre-recorded for students to follow along at their own pace. Can't play all the chords yet? No problem! Just rewind the video and try again until you have it, without feeling like you are holding the class back.

These headphones and headphone splitters (plus aux cables) will allow students 2 students to share an iPad, and piano all at once, with both pieces of technology coming into both their headphones!

Isn't technology AWESOME? That fifth jack will be available for me to plug into as I circulate the room, providing privacy for students as they play for me, and keeping the overall volume of the class at a level that is manageable. With your help, we can take our flipped classroom to the next level!
