My Students
Have you ever seen a killer whale up close? Do you know how it breathes, eats, and lives? What about sharks, dolphins, and penguins? My students have seen them in books and in their wild imaginations, but I want to bring it to life for them!
My students are 7 and 8 year-olds who love to learn!
They are all military children whose parents are serving our country on active duty, some who are wounded or deployed. My classroom encompasses children of all four main branches of service. They love to learn in hands-on and innovative ways. Second grade is a critical level as they are mastering the foundation of primary level skills before they embark into the world of standardized testing in third grade. My students will be prepared and field experiences bring the content to life. Many of my students have moved several times so though the location of the field trip is a local attraction, many have not experienced it. My students also run the spectrum of abilities from special needs to brilliantly gifted. I try to allow all of my students to shine and even on this field trip, they will have roles in order to enable those qualities and allow them to be a part of others' learning when we return to the campus. My students are amazing!
My Project
My students will have the opportunity to go behind the scenes with these animals and their caretakers. They will get to pet them, feed them, see them perform acts, and learn about their environments, careers associated, skills needed to become trainers and caretakers, and more. Our animal unit includes learning about their needs, habitats, and overall environment. This would provide my students an engaging and thrilling way to learn the content in an action-packed hands-on learning experience.
Why is my project so important?
Because my kids are important. I literally and figuratively have the best class ever. I taught them last year in first grade and looped with them to second grade. They are inquisitive, hard working, motivated, and most importantly, excited about learning. They give me 120% all year long. I want to provide this hands-on opportunity as both a reward and a learning adventure. I know the memories and experience make these abstract concepts real.
