Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are some of the most hardworking students at our school. All of my students are special education students.

They are students with Autism, Learning Disabilities, ADHD, Language Disabilities or Other Health Impairments.

These disabilities make learning more difficult for them. In addition, over 65% of my students are English Language Learners, many of these students are still learning how to speak English. Our school has the highest Hispanic population in the state. Our school also qualifies as a Title One School: over 85% of our students live in poverty and receive free/reduced lunch. Despite all of these obstacles, these students are eager to come to school each day. They always try their best and never give up when they face hardships. The students at this school are really special, and their enthusiasm and willingness to learn make teaching them such a joy.

My Project

My students had the opportunity to use Splash math last year. They absolutely loved it! Splash Math is a fun program that levels each student and targets their weaknesses. The teacher can assign certain skills for extra practice to individual students. My kids are begging me to get Splash math again but our free subscription expired.

Class Craft is a video game based classroom management system.

Many of my students struggle with learning correct behaviors and dealing with their emotions. I am currently using the free version of classcraft and it has changed the classroom behaviors dramatically! The kids not only have individual rewards and consequeneces but they each get to work on a team. This provides teamwork and teaches them to help others out. While these behaivors come naturally to some children they do not always come naturally to my students. With the premium version my students will get to work toward special rewards for their indivudal character. This would give them more incentive to be the best they can be. There are also several classroom features that would help with our lessons. They can work together to defeat a boss who asks them academic questions they are working on in class.

RAZ kids is an online reading program that offers hundreds of leveled readers and assessments for students. My students struggle with reading comprehension. This program will allow them to practice answering reading comprehension questions on their level. As a teacher, it is very hard to find passages with comprehension questions for free. It is very time-consuming to make up my own questions because of the wide range of levels we have in our resource classroom.
