Spirited Students Seek Scintillating Scientific Support

My Students

Did you know a cockroach can live for up to a week without a head? I didn't either until one of my students informed me. The kids I have this year are particularly inquisitive and hungry for anything scientific. Our challenge is that we have no science text books or funding for science curriculum.

We are a diverse group of 4th and 5th grade students, speaking seven languages, celebrating our cultural differences and using them to build a unique community.

We love to read and love to learn. We have a variety of personalities, learning styles and reading levels, but it doesn't keep us from working together as a team of students who care about each other.

My Project

Integrating these high-interest, easily accessible books into our classroom will not only fill my student's heads with knowledge, but also inspire them to ask questions, make predictions, and apply their learning in the real world. Students will have so much fun while immersed in exciting text with full color photographs and illustrations, they won't even realize how much they are learning. They will increase their academic vocabulary knowledge, and discover important nonfiction text structure, such as: captions, charts and graphs, fact boxes and side bars, labels, numbered lists and sequence. I am requesting 6 copies each of 11 hands on science books.

My students face a variety of social and academic challenges.

These resources would inspire them to increase their scientific inquiry, expand their horizons, and open their eyes to the possibilities of a broader academic future.
