This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I am a teacher at a Title I school in San Antonio, Texas. I’m writing to share the story of a special group of students and to ask for your support in empowering them through a unique program we’ve built together—our school’s Spirit Club.

While our district funds athletic programs like football, basketball, and soccer, there is currently no funding for our cheer/spirit program.

That didn’t stop us. We created a Spirit Club that goes beyond traditional cheerleading—this is a group designed specifically to uplift students who are facing serious personal challenges such as low self-esteem, lack of support at home, and difficulties with identity, confidence, and belonging.

These students are nominated by teachers, counselors, and staff because we see their potential, even when they don’t see it in themselves. Through Spirit Club, we focus on building character, pride, school spirit, and most importantly, self-worth. Our work has had measurable impacts—improvements in attendance, academic performance, and behavior are just some of the changes we’ve witnessed.

However, unlike their peers on funded athletic teams, our Spirit Club members lack something tangible yet powerful: a uniform. A uniform symbolizes unity, pride, and inclusion. It tells these students: you matter just as much as everyone else.

We are currently seeking financial support or in-kind donations to provide uniforms and materials that allow our Spirit Club to fully represent our school. Whether you can sponsor a single uniform, donate supplies, or help spread the word, your contribution would directly uplift and empower these amazing students.
