This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are eager to learn about new games that we can play in gym class and our after school program! I always tell students about my experiences inside and outside of school regarding any kind of physical activity, and their faces light up at the thought of how fun it would be to do those activities in class everyday and how they can use the surrounding community (parks, fields, etc.) to participate in those activities outside of school. Our students live in the City of Chicago, which has over 600 parks that covers over 8% of our total land in this wonderful city. Many of those parks have indoor multi-purpose buildings that residents can use to participate in physical activity when those bitter Chicago winters come rolling in. My goal is to give them all different kinds of ideas that they can use inside and outside of school to get their daily physical activity in a fun and appropriate manner.
My Project
My students would benefit from more diversity in the physical activities that they can participate in. As a new teacher, it was important for me to understand the needs of my students. At the beginning of our school year, I communicated with staff and students about what their past PE classes were like. I got a lot of positive feedback, but the one thing that stood out to me that I would like to change is adding some brand new games and activities that they had never heard of/participated in before.
My students are especially engaged in PE when they are working together in smaller groups of 2-4 students.
When I put all of this together, I thought of the perfect game for them to learn how to play, and it involves equipment that we do not have at our school: Spikeball. Spikeball is a net sport that is very similar to volleyball, but can be played in smaller groups. This is a game that can be played indoors or outdoors as well, so when this Chicago winter finally ends, we can enjoy the beautiful outdoor atmosphere of this great city and play what is referred to as "the greatest game you've ever played". I first learned of this game on a family vacation, and I have had it in my head ever since! It is a great game for students to play in small groups, in any setting, and it can be played by students of all skill levels.
