Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
We are a high poverty school in the midst of apartments and single family homes. Over fifty percent of the students are from low-income homes and they are on the free or reduced price lunch plan. I have a diverse group of students from many ethnic backgrounds.
My class is very special.
They are full energy in the morning and are eager to come to school. Many benefit from having their breakfast in the class which is free of charge. During this meal time in class, we are learning to take responsibilities by being a class monitor setting the table and cleaning up. We are also learning to eat healthy to stay fit. However, it can get very messy after morning meals. Keeping our floor clean is a challenge.
My Project
My classroom is organized and it looks clean but mold, dust mites, and dirt remains hidden in the floor crevices and on the rug that my students sit on. After having breakfast in the classroom, my floor looks as if we are ready for ants and a cockroach party! I want to keep my students from being sick by keeping my classroom clean.
Our classroom gets swept and vacuumed once a week by our janitor.
When we use the school vacuum, it spews out dusty, dirty air right back out on the floor. I make sure students wipe their shoes on the mat before coming into the room. Still, keeping my rug free of dirt and food is a big challenge. Students with allergies suffer from coughing, sneezing, and itching throughout the day. Stomach flu and exposure to virus from mold cause many absences among the younger students.
I would like to alleviate these symptoms by making sure that the floor is cleaned with the Dyson vacuum cleaner and Swiffer wet mop and they have a clean vacuumed carpet to sit on. With these cleaning tools, we will have a clean and healthier environment to learn in without the unwanted pests.
I'm also requesting a Healthy Office Snacks & Bars Variety Pack to keep hungry children focused on their learning.
