Spheros Need iPad Friends!

Help me give my students 2 iPads so they can use their Sphero mini-robots. I have 10 Sphero mini-robots and only 7 iPads.

My Students

Our school has the highest ESL population in our district, with 33% of our students speaking English as their second language. Both parents usually work and do not speak English so there is little or no support from home for homework.

Teachers are their lifeline to learning and their only English contact, the only place where they can learn anything academic, be it math, science or reading.

Students depend on us to give them an education without help from outside sources.

School is their only learning environment in English. They depend on teachers to provide the best academic environment that they can. Teachers need every minute to count because it is the student's only chance at learning.

Math is especially challenging because they do not understand the English words in the directions. Give them straight numbers and they excel! Give them directions and they struggle and fall behind.

My Project

Currently in my classroom I have 26 students, ten Sphero mini-robots and seven iPads. The school's iPads will not run the Sphero EDU app because they are too old. In my classroom, when learning coding with the Sphero EDU app, students are required to have four students on each iPad. Coding requires a great deal of time and only one person can usually code the Sphero. This essentially eliminates the learning experience from the other three in the group.

The addition of two more iPads, will decrease the number in each group and allow every student a chance to code a Sphero mini-robot.

This will increase their academic learning in coding and allow them to work in a blended learning environment where they can work at their pace. Without the addition of of these iPads, learning is crippled and the Sphero mini-robots are going unused and gathering dust. Furthermore, because such a small percentage of my classroom can use them the learning opportunity is restricted to a few individuals instead of an entire class. Four students on an iPad make this activity extremely time consuming and not worth the investment in learning for seven students.
