My Students

Our school has the highest ESL population in our district, with 33% of our students speaking English as their second language. Both parents usually work and do not speak English so there is little or no support from home for homework.

Teachers are their lifeline to learning and their only English contact, the only place where they can learn anything academic, be it math, science or reading.

Students depend on us to give them an education without help from outside sources.

School is their only learning environment in English. They depend on teachers to provide the best academic environment that they can. Teachers need every minute to count because it is the student's only chance at learning.

Math is especially challenging because they do not understand the English words in the directions. Give them straight numbers and they excel! Give them directions and they struggle and fall behind.

My Project

Coding can be very difficult to teach, but not with Sphero. The engaging app and the fun robot challenge students to code like never before. They can code Sphero to run around the classroom, knock over little bowling pins (included) or just execute a series of fun steps around the classroom. Students are learning hard concepts the whole time they are engaged with Sphero yet there is no complaining! They enjoy learning and it is rewarding for them. They also are learning to work in groups and listen to each other's ideas. Sphero is truly their hero when they are learning to code!
