Sphero, a Hero for All

Help me give my students the opportunity for the whole class to engage in coding practice with Sphero Bolt coding robots.

My Project

Despite the large majority of economically disadvantaged students in our school they all have a passion for learning, specifically technology and coding. By having access to these Sphero robots, students will be given opportunities to be exposed to this emergent STEM field in a fun and exciting way.

Currently there are not enough Sphero robots in the classroom to allow all students to use them at the same time, with these additional devices an entire classroom would be able to work in small groups to practice problem-solving and create unique solutions collaboratively in an engaging way all at once.

Students attend my class every third day for 45 minutes at a time. With these Sphero robots, students will work in small groups to create a map for their robot to visit. They will use block based coding to develop a program for the robot to follow that guides the robot around the map. Once the group has successfully completed their program they will trade maps with other groups and will program their robot to travel through each other's maps. Currently only 1/3 of the students are able to use Sphero on their maps, but with these additional robots 100% of the class can work on their projects simultaneously.
