This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am a speech language pathologist at my school. Many of the families are of a lower socioeconomic status and a majority of the parents of my students are Spanish speaking. My students all have speech and language difficulties, as well as being English language learners. Despite their challenges, my students are always eager and enthusiastic about learning!

My Project

My school's main building is very old and does not have an adequate ventilation system in place. My current speech therapy room is in an old bathroom and is slightly larger than the size of a closet.

The only ventilation in the building is opening the windows and doors.

I would like to provide my speech students with safer, cleaner air in the therapy room by purchasing an air purifier and filters. My students typically come to speech therapy in groups of 3. While students will be instructed on health and safety measures, such as wearing masks, social distancing, washing hands, etc, we all know that these are skills that can be difficult for students with special needs! It is especially important for the speech therapy room to have adequate ventilation, since clear masks may have to be worn so that students can see the therapist's mouth/lips, etc when working on articulation and pragmatic language skills, and vice versa. An air purifier will increase the safety of the air in the therapy room.
