This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am a speech language pathologist in a low income, high poverty school where my students are faced with many challenges both inside and outside of the four walls of our school. With that being said, I want to provide my students with the most enriching and meaningful learning experiences as possible.

Aside from being of a lower socioeconomic status, all of my students have a range of speech and language disorders making their situations extremely unique and difficult.

Despite these circumstances, my students come to school everyday eager to learn. While I cannot control what goes on in my students' lives outside of school, I can certainly control what goes on inside of my classroom. By doing this in an engaging and creative way, I hope to inspire these young learners to continue on a path of academic success.

My Project

At our school, four speech therapists share one classroom to provide services to up to 12 students at a time. We work together to collaborate on creating a comfortable environment set up for success, creating materials that support the specific needs of our students and developing activities that allow our students to reach their maximum potential. We are requesting light covers, a printer and six iPads which will allow us to provide our students with the best possible therapy and support.

Our students deserve to enter a room that provides them the best chances to reach their goals and exceed our expectations.

By using light covers, we will be able to dull the harsh lighting from the fluorescent lights. Many of our students are sensitive to these lights which makes it difficult for them to focus on the tasks at hand.

We use pictures to create materials that all of our students can access. Sometimes this is in the form of sentence strips to help with communication, visual cues to help with narrative retell, or images that help our students remember letters and sounds when learning to read. A color printer and ink will allow us to continue to make the required materials for our diverse caseloads.

iPads are used as both a therapy material and a reward for our hardworking students. We create games, quizzes and activities for our students as well as download educational apps and games that students can work towards earning. The iPads afford our students the opportunity to try new activities and interact with their peers in a way that builds experiences that they would not otherwise have.

We are hopeful that by providing these materials to our students, we will better be able to serve our very deserving and special students.
