Speech and Language Therapy in Virtual Reality

My Students

I'm a Speech-Language Pathologist for our school district. My student population includes middle school and high school students with varying levels of communication needs.

Verbal or non-verbal, my students are finding ways to make their voices heard.

The school district that I work in is low-income and culturally diverse. All of my students are eager to work hard on their communication skills and learn. While working on speech and language goals, they love to play board and card games, play with various toys, listen to music, and watch videos. Some of my students use devices to communicate. Helping these students find their voice is such a fun and rewarding job!

My Project

Virtual reality has become a very popular thing. I'm always looking for new ways to engage my students and give them something they truly enjoy doing. When students are actively attending to therapy sessions, we get more progress.

By giving my students choices, they are able to attain their speech and language goals while working for something that engages them.

The Oculus Quest 2 is another tool to add to the students list of choices to work towards during sessions. We can easily target anything while using the virtual reality headset. Social skills, articulation skills, expanding vocabulary, and basic communication skills can be worked on with any activity.

I know my students appreciate choices in the therapy room and look forward to working towards their goals.
