it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Hello. I coach Speech and Debate at a Title I school. At our tournaments we are required to provide one judge for every four entries which means that my student's parents are volunteering their time to help out. With the ever changing and evolving digital landscape Speech and Debate judging is changing from pen and paper to online ballots. This means that judges are required to bring a laptop to a tournament. This is an additional barrier to our parents who do not own devices to use. With this project I want to have a store of 6 laptops to bring to tournaments for our parent judges to use. This would relieve the burden of entry for any new parent judges and ensure that we are adaptable to each tournament's ballot situation be it on paper or online.
How will this project help my students?
At Speech and Debate Tournaments my students are adjudicated per event they compete in three (or more) times. The judges who adjudicate utilize laptops to give feedback and score the round. A barrier to judging at our tournaments is lack of laptops available for judges which is why this campaign will help my students because it will allow more of our volunteer and parent judges to be able to participate without the burden of technology.
Also the more judges we can bring to our tournaments the more students who can participate in Speech and Debate.
Benefits of Speech and Debate:
Students gain valuable public speaking skills which improves their confidence. With participating in Speech and Debate students are able to share their authentic stories and passions with a varied audience. Student also gain analytical skills when researching their debate topics which also increases their writing skills.
