This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are 3rd graders in an urban, high poverty area. Their life experiences are minimal and many are bilingual. They therefore learn best by doing, experiencing science as they learn new concepts.
Our budget is limited and doesn't allow for many materials. Teaching light waves and the different colors in visible light are difficult concepts for students to grasp without some hands on experience so they can see for themselves what is being taught.
A set of spectroscopes would allow students to easily "see" the colors that make up white light from various light sources (and that they vary from one source to another). The color creators would further develop this understanding as they mix colors to create new colors. We already have materials to teach them waves but nothing to show them the mix of colors in white light.
Colors and light waves need to be seen for the best understanding; your donation will make that possible. They will be engaged in science, making more learning possible.
