Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach a diverse group of moderate to severe learning disabled students, some with fragile medical needs. Some of the students have autism or Down syndrome, one with mitochondrial disease (making her very fragile), and students with other health, physical or intellectual impairments. The students all have amazing attitudes and are very hard working. They love coming to school and learning. Each student has a fun, playful sense of humor and they make my "work" day, a "play" day, every single day. These students fill my life with joy and I want to provide the best and most meaningful education I can for them in return. I recently shared with a colleague that my students are gifts- I am so blessed to be their teacher!

My Project

We serve students with moderate to severe learning differences ("extensive needs"). We have a large population of these special students on our campus, often needing to find a quiet and calm space. They are aided in the process with sensory items, such as a swing, scooter boards, sensory wall, quiet music, sensory toys, and lights- for example.

We need sensory items to get our sensory room up and running.

The dream to provide this room to our special population has been in the works for four years. Thanks to friends, families, anonymous donors, we are finally on our way to developing an amazing space of respite for these sweet students.

Students with extensive needs often are incapable of calming and soothing themselves without assistance, or special sensory soothing items. This sensory room will be used by up to 40 extensive needs kids on campus.
