My Project

I teach 6th grade special education. My students come to the resource room to meet their individual learning needs. They have a desire to learn and be successful in school.

My students need supplies to help them learn abstract math concepts, books on multiple grade levels, and activities to help them learn to read.

Teaching struggling students grade level concepts of multiplication, fractions and adding double digit can't be done with only a book and paper. They need to see and touch their learning tools to be successful. We will be using multiplication and number line white boards to easily practice and correct skills without the frustration of paper. I have included card stock so I can print classroom math games from my home printer. Calculators will be used to learn how to check simple addition, subtraction, multiplication and division problems. The use of a calculator is also a modification for my students on state assessments. My students use headphones to listen to stories and for testing accommodations.

My students come to me reading between a kindergarten-second grade level. Like all students this age they are very much concerned about fitting in with their peers. Although we make weekly trips to the library, they refuse to get a book on their reading level for fear of what someone else will think. I have had non-readers check out 300-page chapter books because that is what their friends are reading. This project would purchase beginning readers, games and beginning-level chapter books. These books would be used in the classroom and checked out by my special education students to be read at home.
