Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Our classroom is a Special Day Class made up of 15 Special Education students, who attempt to gain mastery over their individual learning disabilities to make progress in their educational journey. We have a diverse group of students, with many different cultural backgrounds and socioeconomic levels, and we grow and gain a sense of community and a safe educational environment, built from positive experiences and individual growth.
Our school is in an urban setting, which includes many families who struggle to provide their students’ specific needs, due to their learning disabilities.
We strive to ensure that our students have the individual support, materials, and opportunities to access the content and modified curriculum to meet the learners at their level. Our class goals are built around following our student-created Class Norms which build on building a positive and safe community, within the classroom, built upon mutual respect and open communication.
Our students work through their mistakes and use them as learning opportunities, in order to become better learners, friends, and people.
We teach a positive mindset and encouragement and learn about helpful leadership through our studies, which helps them see where they might later use this strength in their own lives.
Special Education students often need to work twice as hard as their general education counterparts, due to their attention deficiencies and/or over stimulation in the classroom.
The noise canceling headphones, chair bands, and fidget toys are all tools that my students can use in the classroom to maintain their focus and concentration, while providing a fun source of vital enrichment for our neurotypical kids, encouraging them to engage with their environment in new ways.
