My Project

I’m a school district occupational therapist. My primary purpose is to help students engage in their schoolwork and learn. I assist teachers by making items appropriate for our students and relative to IEP goals and teaching standards. This is not easy for many of our learners who have a variety of challenges which makes it hard for them to learn. Many of my students need alternate ways to participate. For instance, several will not write or draw on paper but yet will scribble or start to draw using a dry erase pen on a whiteboard or laminated picture (or even comb-bound thematic books). I have many students who are sensitive to textures but like to use liquid glue and glue item to it (glitter, foam, etc). Not to mention the benefits that squeezing bottles, rotating them, etc. has for motor planning and hand skill development. We also work on eye hand coordination and many of my students are working on cutting, but need help to learn how. Self-opening scissors are the bridge to unable to cut (can’t open) to using standard scissors independently. I’ve seen more left handed students come to me recently, and left handed self opening scissors are hard to find.

Supplies are expensive.

I’ve purchased a lot myself and have made the most of my school resources but both are limited. I appreciate any support from you and DonorsChoose. Thank you.
