My Students

My students are sweet little five and six year olds. I teach in an inclusive kindergarten classroom. This means that students with special needs such as Down Syndrome, or developmental delays are in my classroom. Some schools typically put students with high needs in separate classrooms, away from typically developing peers. However, in my class we believe that every child can learn and each student brings strengths to our room.

My students interact with each as a community where typically developing students mentor students with special needs.

Students in my room are culturally diverse. They speak a variety of languages including Vietnamese, Amharic, Spanish, Ukrainian, Russian, and English. Most of my students live below the poverty line and have not had preschool experiences. I want their first school experience to be fun and exciting. Although my students face socioeconomic challenges, they are always ready to learn and eager to be at school.

My Project

I have requested a set of cots and two ladybug floor cushions. In my class I have students with special needs. Many of my students with special needs often tire easily and sometimes need a quiet spot to lay down. I want to provide them a safe and clean place to take a break. The cots I requested are space-saving and can be stacked when not in use. They will also be a fun alternative-seating choice for typically developing peers who want to lay down to read a good book.

The ladybug cushions are attractive floor cushions which all of my students will want to sit on.

When we have instruction at the carpet my students with special needs frequently have a hard time sitting in the typical criss-cross position. The floor cushions are small enough to fit on the carpet and my children with special needs will be able to snuggle into the ladybugs. I am hopeful that this will provide access to instruction for all of my students. Instead of students with special needs avoiding the carpet, or instructional area, they will look forward to sitting on their ladybug. Everyone in my class deserves to have the best instruction. When I have these seating options, the opportunity for students to participate to their best ability will be available. I hope you will help make this possible for my class.
