Special Olympics Uniforms for Inner City Kids

My Students

Sports and athletics are a huge part of a well rounded childhood.

Our school is home to about 300 students in a high poverty, inner city neighborhood.

Our school is highly mobile with almost 20% of our students experiencing homelessness. Despite the challenges that our students face, they are incredibly resilient. The students that learn our school's cluster program all have low incidence disabilities such as Autism Spectrum Disorders, Intellectual Disabilities, and Down Syndrome. Their vivacious personalities, zest for life, and boldness are a huge part of our school culture. They do not let developmental delays or poverty get in the way of their learning. I truly LOVE my job as their teacher and cannot imagine teaching a different group of children.

My Project

Special Olympics stands in the gap for our students, plain and simple. It has offered an outlet for our unique students where they can be themselves, engage in real competition, and be truly included. Each year, the 39 students at our school with special needs engage in Spring Games (an adapted track and field competition), bowling, and Cubs Care (an adapted baseball program done jointly with the Chicago Cubs). These experiences are a highlight for our students, who have typically never been a part of a team, sport, or activity that openly engages them exactly how they are. We would love for our students to not just feel like a team, but look like one! These requested uniforms will proudly show our school name and logo to give them the look to match their attitudes.

Special Olympics is an incredible opportunity for our students - please help them look the part.
