My special needs students are in high school now, and we are working on independent living skills. My students have a variety of learning levels, including autism, learning disabilities, and lower-functioning students with mental disabilities. My classroom is designed to be a studio apartment in order to teach Activities for Daily Living. My students will be learning about the responsibilities that each of us have in our daily lives, and we will also learn how we will balance our work time and our leisure time.
My Project
Students will learn how to properly use a microwave to prepare meals and how to reheat items. The microwave is fast and easy to use, but there are several special tricks and methods to make foods cook correctly to taste great. Students will prepare simple recipes and learn how to use the microwave safely and efficiently. Microwaving foods can be a good way for my students to prepare foods, either by defrosting and heating frozen dishes or by preparing fresh foods. Microwaves cook food a bit differently than stove tops and ovens, so students will learn the special techniques of microwaving.
