My students are in high school now, and we are working on independent living skills. My students have a variety of learning levels, including autism, learning disabilities, and lower-functioning students with mental disabilities. My classroom is designed to be a studio apartment in order to teach Activities for Daily Living. My students will be learning about the responsibilities that each of us have in our daily lives, and we will also learn how we will balance our work time and our leisure time.
My Project
Students will learn basic cooking skills in my Activities for Daily Living classroom. The science of preparing foods will be taught in an environment that would be similar to being at home, with appliances and tools that students will be using independently one day. Everyone will be taught simple ways to prepare healthy food from scratch, not just in a microwave! Students will proudly prepare and present snacks, cookies, and meals, with these kitchen appliances and tools, learning how to cook for themselves and how to cook for others, also!
