My special needs students are in high school now, and we are working on independent living skills. My students have a variety of learning levels, including autism, learning disabilities, and lower-functioning students with mental disabilities. My classroom is designed to be a studio apartment in order to teach activities for daily living. My students will be learning about the responsibilities that each of us has in our daily lives, and we will also learn how we will balance our work time and our leisure time.
My Project
My students have space to use many activities in my classroom, providing time for movement and working in groups, without having to sit at a desk. Hands-on science learning projects help to demonstrate many basic tasks that everyone has to do daily, such as learning about cooking and cleaning. My students will learn hands-on about force and motion, the property of magnets, how temperature affects matter, and they will learn how to measure solids and liquids. These activities will teach facts and skills that will help these students be independent, and students can be moving and be active, while actively learning.
