This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Every day when I enter my class, my heart aches a little to look at the carpet that my special needs students will be sitting on for a large part of their school day. The carpet is old, stained and dirty. My class needs a new carpet to make floor time sanitary as well as educational.

My students are preschool children with special needs, including Autism, Cerebral Palsy, speech and language delays, developmental and cognitive delays.

I have two students in wheelchairs and another students with mobility problems. They are three to five years old. My students live in a poverty stricken area. All of my students at my school receives free breakfast and lunch. This is my first year in this classroom with a new longer school day. My special needs are so sweet and they enjoy coming to school. Please help me provide a clean, cozy carpet where they can learn, play, dream, rest and explore.

My Project

The carpet area is one of the most used areas in my special needs preschool classroom. The students use the carpet area for circle time, independent play, music and movement and an array of others developmentally appropriate task. Many of my students are learning gross motor skills such as sitting up, crawling, rolling over and walking. It is so exciting seeing my students gain these new skills before my eyes. My current carpet is colorless, stained and dirty. I keep it as clean as I can but it is unattractive. Some of my students are learning to sit. At times during their hard work of moving their bodies, they get tired and they rest their small sweet faces on the dirty carpet. I am always rushing around placing small blankets on the floor trying to keep their faces off the dirty carpet. My special needs preschoolers need a large carpet that they can sit on, sing on, rest on and grow on.

My students will be able to sit, crawl and play on the new bright, clean colorful carpet during classroom large group activities like circle time. The carpet will be use for independent play such as building with blocks. It will be a place that they can listen to stories, read, sing songs, use musical instruments, socialize and work together to learn their alphabets, numbers, shapes and colors.
