"The mediocre teacher tells. The good teacher explains. The superior teacher demonstrates. The great teacher inspires." -William Arthur Ward.
I want to inspire my students to learn and be everything that they can be in this world.
My 28 Kindergarten students attend a Title I public school in a beautiful coastal town in North Carolina. All economic levels are represented. For many students, English is their second language. Our state has adopted the Common Core Curriculum which has integrated Science and Technology into all parts of the daily curriculum. We live in a resort/fishing town with lots of migration in the off tourist season. While our school is small, with only 3 teachers per grade level, each Kindergarten teacher has 28 students. Our community is close and most everyone works in some type of trade to benefit the resort areas. I would like for my students to have STEM activities to inspire them to branch out from what is familiar to them and think more about the world around them.
My Project
My students are very diverse and come from many different backgrounds. Some of my students have special needs that make it difficult for them to learn in a regular classroom. As a teacher, I need to make sure all of my students are engaged and learning at their own pace.
My students need an easel, large crayons, special writing tools, and magnetic ten frames that will hold their counters.
An easel would make it easier for my students with special needs to use magnetic letters to order their ABCs and build words. Felt and other textured materials can also be used with this easel to help students learn to retell stories and to apply their learning to create stories. The large crayons will not break easily, and with the special 'claws' that attach to pencils, writing will not be so frustrating. The magnetic ten frames will help them as they participate in whole group activities as the magnetic counters will not fall and will be easier to place. These materials will make a difference in how my students learn and give them the extra help they need to grow and learn at their own pace.
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
