About My Students

What excited me the most is the fact that this project was student-led by three of my amazingly wonderful students; Denika, Alvens and Mark. This project created opportunities for my students to work collaboratively on expressing their hearts' desire to have individualized desktop computers for learning

My student are very sweet and caring, but it always hurt to see and hear them upset because they were unable create a beautiful customized cover page or type their final project to post onto the bulletin board. The students are not able to spend time researching a common core topic in Reading and Writing, Math, Science and Social Studies, or practice using the Internet correctly. Collaboratively, my students developed the idea of having individualized desktop computers because of having several hands-on experiences in how hard computers are to get/use in our school. They agreed to be committed to developing this project for 11 desktop computers to add to the one Chromebook in our classroom which works off and on; it has a mind of its own. With these desktop computers, my students will be able to practice writing and editing, math fluency with REFLEX MATH, Mobymax, and ELA with iready applications. They will be able to practice and improve their collaborative and organizational skills.

My students with disabilities desperately need to be career and college ready. They need 11 desktop computers for research, to increase independence, and to prepare them for this big and scary world of complex cultural and social-emotional environments. Having individualized desktop computers will increase creativity, improve my students’ critical thinking and problem solving skills. My students need these skills to be marketable and competitive in all educational settings and for career and college readiness. The students at our school are struggling to receive the best education possible while dealing with the circumstances of living a poor and overcrowded school district. Our school has a very high poverty rate. We are a Title I School and have close to 100% free lunch servings. Our school has nearly 1000 students from various and similar backgrounds with single parents, homelessness, or are in foster care.

In Their Own Words

Hi we are Denika, Mark and Alvens, Our goal is to stop the fighting over the Chromebook. We want peace in our classroom. Our goal is to have 11 desktop computers in our classroom for research and typing all subject papers on time. In our classroom, we help each other a lot, but sometimes it is hard with just one Chromebook computer because the other one broke. We try to help with the typing, but then we don't get our typing done on time with one computer shared for 11 sometimes 12 students.

When we get these computers, we promise to protect them, keep them clean and safe. We will not play around on the computers or eat or drink on the computer desk. We will be actively involved, in online career and college readiness research and activities. We will go on teacher approved learning sites. We will turn in our papers on time. We will be respectful to each other in online learning group work. We will take turns caring and monitoring each computer when we log on and off.

This project is VERY important to us because our parents cannot afford computers and the Internet. So we do not do research at home. I can't. And most of my friends are from the same backgrounds with one parent homes, homelessness, or are in foster care. In our school 100% of us eat free lunch and breakfast every day. We need 11 desktop computers in school with headsets for practicing research skills, writing and editing, reading fluency with iReady, math fluency with REFLEX math and Mobymax.
