We are a district with eight elementary schools and seven elementary music teachers. I love teaching in a district, where music is valued and new ideas are supported. I enjoy learning new things and broaden my horizon in order to bring the best in music education to my students.
My students are curious, engaged, musical, full of energy, and have a love for learning.
My students have different strengths and limitations, patience and tempers - all traits that make my teacher days interesting and never boring.
My Project
I am the cohort leader of our elementary music cohort. Over the last few years, the number of students who need accommodations and who receive some kind of help has grown rapidly. We music teachers are faced with larger class sizes, less help from classroom aids, which often results in frustrated students. We teach classes with EI or CI students, sometimes separately, sometimes mainstreamed.
A workshop with a music therapy specialist will give us a different perspective from our traditional music education point of view.
We expect to learn new strategies and ideas that we can use to teach our special needs students, learn about the benefits of music therapy, and how to apply those ideas in a small group and whole class setting. I believe that it will benefit a large number of students across our district for a number of years to come.
