My Students

Our elementary school is truly a remarkable place for students and families. Many of the creative children in my classroom are English Language learners, where the primary language at home is Spanish, Portuguese, Arabic, or Mandarin. My youngest class is a small group of students who have been diagnosed as developmentally delayed, with down syndrome or autism. All of my classes are so thoughtful and ask so many questions about what we are reading about in class. The diversity in the school reflects the diversity in the community with 70% of the students at our school living in the town where our school is located.

My Project

I am posting a project that introduces and/or reinforces math concepts (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division etc.) using picture books. As a Literacy Specialist, I do enjoy reading math books to the students to add some variety in the reading lessons. The students also like a little variety too!

Our first grade class usually begins with a reading on the rug, and we have just finished reading a set of math "big books", so these new books will help to reinforce what they have read already, as well as introduce new concepts.

These books appear very enjoyable and interesting to read. My hope is that these books will be an imaginative and fantastic way to learn about math!
