Special Education Students Want a Carpet They Can Learn From

My project needs 1 6 by 9-foot Picture-Word Activity Carpet, covered with labeled illustrations of farm animals, ocean life, modes of transportation, insects, and jungle animals.

FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. Banoff's classroom raised $363

Hi! I am the special education teacher in a kindergarten inclusion class in Brooklyn. We are a Title I, early-childhood center. Approximately seventy-five percent of our students receive free lunch. There are 14 wonderful four and five year olds in my class. Some of these children have been diagnosed with various disabilities, including delays in gross and fine motor skills, attention deficit disorder, and speech impairments. During the first two months of school, I had noticed that all of my students love sitting on the floor when learning new material or completing classwork. At five years old, it seems that the freedom they have on the ground creates a more positive learning experience than sitting on a hard chair and leaning on a large wooden table. They often become very restless at the tables, especially some who lack the body control to even stay on the chair in the first place. I would love to complete as many lessons as possible on the floor, but the children have just been sitting on cold, hard tiles! Although they love to move around on the floor, I know they would be a lot more comfortable on a large carpet. I am asking for a 6 by 9-foot carpet that will be used as a meeting area for my students, as well as a comfy place to complete classwork and learn new material. The carpet I am requesting is a "Picture-Word Activity Carpet," and is covered with labeled illustrations of farm animals, ocean life, modes of transportation, insects, and jungle animals. These labeled illustrations will help build many early literacy skills such as print awareness, word-object association, spelling, and classification. I know this carpet will be a great benefit to my students. A carpet is a wonderful place to meet and complete classwork, but this is a very special carpet, as it can also act as an aid to literacy. Thank you so much.
