Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Intellectually Disabled and Autistic students (grades 9th-12th)are enrolled in resource/CTE classes that focus on basic skills of core classes, independent living skills, organizational skills, and career related skills throughout the school day (Block Schedule). During the afternoon, the students participate in PROJECT FIT (Espresso Express) and PROJECT SHINE (students working to improve the school's environment).

The students make and sell espresso coffee to the teachers and staff throughout the building.

They focus on maintaining a stocked cart, customer service, collecting/counting money, making change, and documenting sales. Upon returning from lunch, students check the board for their daily job assignment, gather the necessary materials/equipment for their specific job, leave the classroom with their work crew (consisting of 2-4 students) to attend to their designated job site. The students are also in charge of the school uniforms; washing, drying, folding, and organizing in the storage closet.

My Project

Special needs students with neurological differences learn best when they are exposed to hands-on opportunities. The purpose of incorporating a cricut maker in the classroom is to allow my students to explore technology by using a computer aided design while also creating activities that allows them to apply their knowledge of STEM projects (science, technology, engineering, and math) to complete a project. This also serves as a vocational training which is vital in preparing them for the workforce. Special need students (specifically higher functioning Intellectual Disabled and with Autism Spectrum Disorder), often face challenges with planning, organizing, and executing complex tasks; as well as deficits in the area of social and interpersonal skills. Most importantly, they struggle with connecting their academic work to later possible career options.

By donating to our project, you will not only help them increase their academic skills, but you will ultimately help them gain vocational skills that they can apply later in life.

Many valuable skills can be learned by using a Cricut Maker such as time management, problem solving, communication, and technology skills. These skills can be applied in school and as an adult. These skills are useful throughout all subjects and develops their creativity and can prepare them for a variety of careers.
