This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I have 13 amazing special education students who are ready to break the learning gap, but it has become much more difficult due to budget cuts. Our school is in a low income community and resources are limited. 92% of our students receive free or reduced-price lunch. Most of my students parents cannot afford a computer much less WIFI. I am trying to prepare my students to become 21st Century Learners; and even though they are faced with all these setbacks, they continue to show determination to succeed. I cannot wait to see how much they will learn using technology. The endless opportunities await my students. They can do more research for their informative essays, watch time lapse videos on erosion, compare and order fractions, learn how to code, etc.... There are so many things they can learn having the technology at their fingertips. I can't wait!
My Project
Having chromebooks will allow for different structures of learning in my classroom. One way they will be used is as a STEM center. Students can look up pictures of catapults and then design their own using nothing more than Popsicle sticks, rubber bands, and Pom-poms. Another way they will be used is by recording the results of an experiment. Recently, we investigated how erosion works. Students could take pictures of their projects that represent erosion and record observations through notes. They could collaborate on group findings by sharing through the google classroom. I could download apps for various math practice skills for a math center, which would allow me to have activities for both my highest performing and most struggling students.
My classroom is not yet at the level of technologically that I need to meet their needs as learners.
This grant will help to close that gap just a little bit more. Many of my students come from very low-income families. My students will research simple machines to help in their engineering projects. Help us become science engineers so that we become the generation that will help solve world problems.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
