My Students
The 12th grade students in Reel Reading are excited to apply their understandings of literature to a new form of text: film. Their analysis skills are sharp, and they're eager to tackle the layered nuances of the silver screen.
Students come from all over Philadelphia to Science Leadership Academy, where they embrace an education rooted in inquiry.
The learning they do extends far beyond the hours of the school day or the walls of our building. SLA is exceptional in many ways, but because we are a small school in a big city, we still face challenges in funding the programs our students crave and the activities in which they thrive.
My Project
Reel Reading is a senior elective English course where students tackle literary analysis through films. We explore the works of artists from Charlie Chaplin to Alfred Hitchcock to Wes Anderson. We think about film as a form of literature, which can be "read" deeply when the viewer understands its complexity and can use its language. In addition to exposing students to a canon of great films, Reel Reading will teach students about the cinematographic principles, narrative structures, and writing and editing techniques through which these visual texts create meaning. Through class viewings and individual and collaborative projects, students will become fluent in the language of visual culture; they come to deeply understand the many deliberate decisions that created it and determine what makes it art.
Working speakers will not only enable students to hear the films we're watching, but also parse out the nuances of screenplay, dialogue, actor choices, and distinguish between soundtrack and score.
They will make our classroom theater function as a modern learning space.
