Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
All of the students are watching in rapt attention as one of their classmates launches into a speech about the house bill being debated in class. This is a scene I very much enjoy watching as a teacher. I have six wonderful 7th grade Civics classes who love to debate.
The class debates add a level of excitement to the content that highly motivates the students. Kids who are not focused are brought on task by the energy involved in a debate. However, the debates do not work as well as they could.
The students are excellent, but the classroom is lacking some crucial furniture. Two podiums and a document sorter will bring the class debates to a whole new level. Podiums serve an important role in focusing the audiences attention. Furthermore a shy student is much more likely to go up and speak behind the shelter of a podium than stand in the middle of an open space. The document sorter would allow the complexity of the debate to increase by facilitating a docket and clearinghouse of important information.
