My Students
My students are a fantastic group of 5 and 6 year olds. They are just beginning to explore reading and learning how to engage with books. Many of my students come from homes where there are no books and no way to get to the library. Our classroom is their first opportunity to explore books.
Our school is ethnically diverse and every year we have 49% of our students on free and reduced lunch.
Our school does a great job with teaching all kinds of kids...ESOL, students with disabilities, and every child in between because we are continually looking for ways to meet students where they are and to knock down every obstacle that stands in their way of learning.
Our Kindergarten students are hungry to learn to read, but many do not have access to books at home, have no transportation to get to the library, and need a place where they can go to interact with books and reading. The classroom is that place. It is a place where books can take them away from the difficulties of their home lives and transport them to a new adventure, to a place only their imaginations can take them. I want to give them that chance to find something new in a book.
My Project
Dr. Seuss says it best, "The more you read, the more you know. The more you know, the more places you'll go." Speakaboos offers my students as well as the other 6 Kindergarten classrooms at WVES access to interactive electronic books that include activities with comprehension-based alignments between the written word, spoken word, and illustrations. Speakaboos offers books that transport students to new worlds, new adventures, new experiences and new learning. Thanks to our wonderful school district, our classroom has access to 8 touch-screen laptops and headphones. This means that 8 children a day can be fully engaged in reading and listening to reading using the Speakaboos technology in our classroom.
This project would allow my students the opportunity to engage with books to meet all interests, increase reading fluency and comprehension, and more importantly, to stimulate their desire to read!
Research states that a child's ability to read is the #1 indicator of a child's future success. My goal is for every student to leave my classroom with a LOVE of reading, a love of books, and the knowledge of just how far reading can take them. Help me engage students in a world of reading.
