This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our students are a diverse group of boys and girls with amazing personalities that blow us away every day. Our students live in the heart of a bustling urban center. They are primarily African-American and Latino. We are a special needs public school. We have students from all over our city who attend some of our special programs.
All of our students have special needs.
Many of them have multiple disabilities. Many of them are diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder. They are learning to communicate in their own ways as they learn not only life skills but academics as well.
My Project
My students have speech and language deficits. They need additional services to help them, communicate their intentions with others every day. The books and matching games will help the students develop their understanding of who, what, and where questions. They will also help develop sequencing skills and retelling of events and stories.
Speech-Language therapy in a school setting encompasses so much more than just being able to articulate your words clearly.
It also involves the pragmatics of speech, fluency, cognition, executive function, voice, and so much more. The Toobaloos will help with voice. The Mystery Box and The Touch and Match game will help with vocabulary development.
Some children need immediate feedback. The token board can help them see their progress, but it also allows them to develop a delay time in receiving a reward. Communication is a key part of social interactions. The Social Skills board game will help my students, especially those with ASD, communicate socially. All of this will help in school and generalize into their home life and into the community.
