Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My students are part of District 75 in NYC, ranging in ages 13 through 21, with moderate to severe cognitive, physical, and social disabilities with diagnoses including autism spectrum disorder, down syndrome, cerebral palsy, and multiple disabilities. All of my students love engaging in conversations, vocational site tasks, and participating in group activities with staff and peers. Many of my students use alternative augmentative communication devices (AAC devices) where they use picture symbols, sign language, or typing and communication devices to navigate their world and interact with others.

My goal for my students is to be as independent as possible with activities of daily living, living as independent as possible, and holding some level of a job in their futures.

They benefit greatly from visual supports such as visual schedules, sequences, and reminders in order to stay organized and be independent in everyday life tasks that we often take for granted. All of my students are incredibly special because of their love and appreciation for learning, and I am proud to be a part of their journey!

The MacBook Air will provide my students access to a multitude of applications that will aid them in preparing for job interviews, daily living tasks, and will expose them to different skill sets they could use for a job in the future (i.e. graphic design). Due to the low socioeconomic status of the majority of our students, they typically have limited access to structured technology programs that will allow them to explore graphic design, generate resumes, improve reading and writing skills, and increase exposure to relevant technology applications.

All of my students are extremely motivated to learn how to read, write, and learn new skills in order to be as independent as possible after transitioning out from our program.
