Speak Up for Safer Relationships

My students need the newly published graphic novel of "Speak" and nonfiction texts on sexual assault prevention and mindfulness. The graphic novel is a vital accompaniment to the novel for students who are English Language Learners.

FULLY FUNDED! Mr. Ei's classroom raised $2,915

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

As newcomers to the U.S., 100% of my students are recently-arrived immigrants to America. My students speak more than 40 native languages and yearn to be part of the "American teen experience". However, they face many obstacles and unfamiliar stress in adjusting to their new lives in America. Some are the primary caregivers for their families, and feel dire pressure to quickly learn English.

My students are often forced to balance traditional cultural values with new, unfamiliar social norms especially around gender roles, sexual expression, dating safety, and consent.

Building a safer future for all of my students around healthy relationships means giving them the intellectual, emotional, and physical tools they need to become confident and informed in making their own decisions around sexual activity including using strong refusal teaching safe from aggressors in their personal relationships. For my students, in particularly those who come from cultures that have not traditionally empowered them to refuse or to say "NO", or to give Enthusiastic Consent by saying "Yes" learning these skills is vital and potentially life-saving, now and in the future as they go off to college and adulthood.

My Project

As a discipline, Health Education is ever-changing and offers opportunities for life-altering discussions and important social-emotional growth. My focus for this project is to enable young people, regardless of cultural or religious background, gender identity, sexual orientation, race, or ability, to examine the facts around safer sexual relationships, make informed decisions, build the skills to provide enthusiastic consent to their current or future partners and prevent violence in their intimate relationships. At BIHS, we foster a sense of social justice and empathy that fuels social action.

Opportunities to speak openly around the issues of sexual harassment and prevention are rare in many of my students’ lives.

Within this unit about sexual assault prevention, students and I will read a classic text and graphic novel, "Speak" by Laurie Halse Anderson, that addresses the damaging effects of sexual violence and the ultimate healing potential of using one’s voice to recover. We will research the topic through nonfiction narrative and current news accounts. We will create a safer classroom for all students with interactive discussions and materials; use critical thinking to analyze survivors’ stories; participate in hands-on negotiation skill-building to stay safer; and create a school-wide awareness campaign for younger students in our school in their many native languages.

Please give my students the opportunity to prevent sexual harassment and assault in their own lives, and in their wider communities. The skills and attitudes they develop in this unit will follow-them into young adulthood and have the potential to change the lives of some of the most vulnerable members of our communities.
