My Project
This project is inspired by the 2nd graders in my classroom and school. We have found lately that elementary students are struggling to work on concepts such as communication, social skills, conflict resolution, respect, and manners. It's hard for them to collaborate with their peers. It has been an ongoing process helping students to learn how to talk with each other in a positive way in order to work together, solve problems, and get through a school day successfully. When elementary students are struggling to get along with their peers, it has an impact on them in so many ways. As teachers, we want to help the whole student, and not just see them as a test score or a name on the paper. It's important to help students while they are young about the power of respect, manners, social skills, and so many other important life skills, in order for them to not just get more out of their schooling, but also become a more well-rounded, healthy, individual who is getting ready for bigger things as they get older. This project is requesting a range of math-themed board games. As they "play", they are working on essential life skills such as communicating with others, showing respect when they win or lose, and working on their manners as they do tasks such as taking turns, helping each other, following directions, working together, etc... I also plan to use these in my after school groups for the 2nd graders. Our high school student volunteers who are coming as mentors this year after school, can also play the games with the students. The high school students can help model ideal behaviors and manners to help the 2nd graders. Thank you for your time and consideration.
