Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our school was broken into earlier this school year and our computer carts were stolen! We are trying to encourage our students to develop 21st Century skills but that is difficult to do without computers to do research, communicate and create products.
Most of my students are of Hispanic descent.
I grew up in the same neighborhood as many of my students. In fact, some of them had the same elementary teachers I had. They are a good bunch of kids. They have a lot of potential and motivation to learn, their interest just needs to be peaked. They love to play soccer whenever they can squeeze it in. Many of them like to listen to dubstep music. Currently, chess and VC (Vietnamese cards) are becoming really popular on campus.
My Project
I encourage my students to complete projects at least twice a semester. Some past projects included making diet plans for people with certain diet restrictions, a research paper on current biotechnology, a treatment plan/analysis for a sick person with an unknown illness and the complete levels of organization. These projects bring the content they learn to real world issues that affect them personally.
These projects not only promote interest, they help students remember the content.
They need computers to do research, communicate with professionals and even to communicate their own ideas in presentations and papers. They will need these skills not only in college, but life beyond it.
