Sparkly Fairy Light Reading Corner Promoting Empathy

My Project

Our library is a warm and vibrant hub in Harlem, New York. Murals outside the school celebrate the accomplishments of renowned authors such as Zora Neale Hurston, Claude McKay, Langston Hughes, and the school's namesake orator and leader, Sojourner Truth, a fierce advocate for literacy. At our school, we want the library to be a haven, an inspiration, and a launchpad for academic excellence. This project creates a soft reading corner with a cushion as soft as a cloud, and aqua-silver sequins and fairy lights on the wall to soothe students in distress. Our goal is to support emotional regulation and help motivate students to focus on the beauty of the written word.

Let's create a cozy, sparkling reading refuge, a calming space where kids will fall in love with books.

I want the library to open the door to possibilities and wonder, and a sparkly corner with soft blue walls and cushions will help us enter that space.

Students who are on the spectrum or have ADHD or have experienced hardship or trauma may have trouble focusing on books in the library. In my past experience, I've found it beneficial to provide various kinds of seating to meet the needs of all students. In our difficult world, we all have so much on our minds and so many distractions. I can't imagine that there's anyone in the school who wouldn't find the cozy reading corner helpful at some moment in their lives. Our meditation corner will contain sequin walls that provide soothing tactile stimulation and the fairy lights will spark creativity.

Our creation of a reading haven provides a space where reading is accessible and possible for all. A library is more than an educational space--it's also a home and a comfort. It's a place where dreams grow.
