My students need exciting eye catching science activities to spark their interest and challenge their curiosity. We would like to include in our science center an age appropriate microscope, that may enhance several science topics such as plants. Additionally science journals would help the students track their observations and record their scientific investigations. Other science related hands on activities would include a sea life specimen set, a flower model and non-fiction books on several of our science center topics, "The Seashore", "Trees", "Magnets", "Polar Animals", "Nutrition", "Plants", "Winter", "Underwater Animals", and "Rocks".
All children start out being very curious, however the mechanical video games/not funny cartoons/ not for children TV shows/ reality TV, etc. are causing our children to lose that spark.
The children in my pre-kindergarten class are at the perfect age to regain or reignite that love for adventure. Science is the perfect avenue to entice them to more actively explore the world around them. This school is in the inner city where most of the students do not have the opportunity to even go outdoors after school do to the unsafe streets. Schools can be that safe playground for these youngsters. They need structured but inviting learning experiences. School should be happy and fun. The children will learn all about various science topics while enjoying what they are actively exploring.
The school system has a curriculum that describes what the child of each grade level should achieve. The interesting point is that our budgets are constantly getting cut. Therefore providing my class with exciting science materials is not a priority. Many of objectives in the curriculum request the use of science equipment. I would like to give the students this opportunity to meet with success by requesting some materials that will provide these experiences.
Science is an exciting outlet for curious 4-5 year olds. They naturally like to explore and investigate interesting topics and hands-on materials. Needed in the class science center are more interesting and eye catching activities. The center is designed to change topics every month. The center needs at least one new activity per topic that will catch the attention of active pre-kindergarteners. This activity needs to be channeled into learning experiences. These learning experiences could develop into a life long quest for answers using the scientific method.
You will make it possible for my students to empower themselves with knowledge. Due to the unsafe city streets, the high cost of buses for school trips, and the lack of stimulation in the homes, these scientific experiences must be brought to the children.
They will learn to love the trees and plants, to respect and take care of our world and all its living creatures. They will have a better understanding about good health and how to take care of their own bodies. You can help provide all the valuable learning for these budding scientists and we will truly be grateful. Thank You for considering our project!
